Guarding the Fire: A Textbook on Spirituality for Young Men

Description:
Have boys come to you to talk about death, life, suicide, sex? Do you know kids seeking a spiritual dimension in their lives? Young men of high-school age are more spiritual than most let on. Guarding the Fire challenges young men to reflect on their own soul energy and spiritual experience as they journey into manhood. It both blesses and challenges the spiritual imagination of young men by telling stories and encouraging them to tell their own.

Excerpt:
"Sometimes our schooling in religion gives us too many answers and encourages too few questions. We know the bible stories. We know the truths and doctrines we are supposed to believe. We have heard them often. A split grows between religion, which we think of as information and doctrines, and our experience of the Sacred in our lives and world. I experienced this difference in taking parish youth groups and Catholic high school groups on canoe trips into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, a wilderness area bordering Northern Minnesota and Canada. I found that my youth groups prayed with more freedom and spontaneity than the Catholic high school students, and I'm still puzzling about why."
